BRITAIN HOSTS CONFERENCE ON BEST IN ANGLO-SCANDINAVIAN LIBRARY PRACTICE

'Libraries, Learning and Life' is theme as UK and Nordic countries celebrate 50 years of co-operation.

Exeter is the host city for the May 2003 Anglo-Scandinavian Public Library Conference. First held in 1953 and now in its fiftieth year, the conference theme for 2003 is 'Libraries, Learning and Life' and speakers will present papers from each of the participating Nordic countries.

Hosted by four Scandinavian nations - Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden - as well as the UK - in rotation, the Conference takes place every three
years. It offers an ideal forum through which to meet professional colleagues from the Nordic countries and Iceland and to share ideas and experiences in a warm and friendly environment.

"The Anglo-Scandinavian Public Library Conference is a unique event in the library and information calendar" says Jill Martin, Assistant Director, Member Services, at CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, and the Head of CILIP's International Division. "It works because the participating countries have long experience of sharing joint practice."

Running from Saturday 17 to Tuesday 20 May, the conference is followed by a study tour of new and innovative libraries up and down the UK. During the rest of the week delegates will be able to see some of the best that the UK has to offer in public library design and services, taking in visits to libraries in Bournemouth, Birmingham and Norwich, as well as others en-route.

Conference sessions include overviews of lifelong learning strategies and initiatives throughout the Nordic countries, as well as case studies in government lifelong learning initiatives. The importance of library learning as a means of promoting social inclusion will receive special consideration, and workshops will examine a range of issues surrounding the actual delivery of lifelong learning in public libraries.

"This year's programme promises the customary high level of professional content," Jill Martin concludes. "And to mark the 50th anniversary of the conference, we are also planning a lively birthday party!"

The outline programme of the 2003 Anglo-Scandinavian Public Library Conference follows the Notes to Editors.
